QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer.
It supports most common virtualization architecture pairings.
With the portable QEMU-Manager (1) and with KVM you can start without conversion virtual machines with harddisks based on vdmk-files from VMware machines and hope to find instructions to play such machines as with VMware player.

Download for WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 from (1). No Admin-rights for QEMU-Manager necessary, but admin-rights are required for the old KQEMU Accelerator. However, no USB boot support from the motherboard without admin rights.
A list of (un)successfully tested QEMU-configurations with settings of VGA Chipset (Network and Audio) and with information about Guest OS and Host OS you find on http://www.claunia.com/qemu/old/index.php :
Windows XP as Guest OS has been tested successfully using the VGA Chipsets "Bochs VESA VGA" or "Cirrus GD5446" with Network- & Audio-Support.
However, comments on http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=640 miss a link with an information about how-to setup and run Windows XP on a non-Admin PC (using QemuManager) and browse the web with Windows XP.
It seems to be very difficult to perform the quick and smooth running of Win XP from a USB thumb-drive without admin-rights. There are many reports, that QEMU-VMs with WinXP as Guest-OS run extremely slow.
